Lesson description: I love The Police - they're possibly my favorite band of the new-wave era. The melodies, the grooves, and the arrangements are all so creative. The intersection of punk & reggae, with jazzy turns and catchy choruses.
Here's what I like to do:
Learn how to play 4-5 songs by an artist. Once I've done that, I can start to observe patterns that show up--chord choices, rhythms, & tones.
Then, I take those little motifs and put them in a new context--separate from the original material.
It's magical how you can make someone else's brilliant ideas combine with your own! In this example, I took Andy Summers's glassy chords, rhythmic attacks, and syncopated arpeggiation and applied it to a chord progression I've had floating around my head for decades now. It's interesting how "Police-like" it became - I hope it inspires you to do the same!
