Three Greasy Theme & Variation Tricks

Lesson description: Theme & Variation is a pretty huge subject in classical music, and us rock players tend not to think about it so much on a conscious level, though more likely than not we are utilizing it subconsciously.

If you look it up, there's a myriad of ways to recycle & modify themes--so much so that it's a bit overwhelming. For this lesson I focused mainly on 3 simple tricks:

  • repeating a theme, with a slightly different ending
  • moving a theme to a different part of the scale, or fretboard
  • grabbing the end of a theme to generate a new theme
