How to Combine Mixolydian and Blues to Dress Up Your Pentatonic Boxes

Lesson description: This is something I notice all the great improvisers do: add in phrases from other scales to their usual pentatonic shapes. In this scenario, I focus on the intersection between mixolydian and blues, in the context of Steppenwolf's "The Pusher."

Here's some things I think would be good to work on:

  • Know all 5 shapes of your pentatonic (I use CAGED)
  • Know all 5 shapes of your mixolydian
  • Construct phrase that start in one scale, and mutate into the other
  • Pay specific attention to the flat 3rd to major 3rd movement
  • Try practicing in a chord groove + fills kinda way
